2017s Composer-in-Residence Rafael Jerjen and Associate Composer- in-Residence Sam Hadlow will present their newly created music for the Wednesday Night Orchestra, continuing the tradition of innovative and exciting new work being performed at the Perth International Jazz Festival. 

WAYJO’s annual Composer-in-Residence program is an important part of our desire to develop emerging big band composers, and we are proud to premiere their work at the Perth International Jazz Festival. 

Since 1983, WA Youth Jazz Orchestra has provided opportunity and inspiration to some of Australia’s most outstanding jazz artists. WAYJO has earned acclaim for performances of the highest calibre, and regularly works with award-winning Australian and international artists. 

WAYJO produces and annual season of outstanding jazz music, from classics to brave new contemporary work, as well as running educational and touring programs.

Rafael Jerjen is a nationally recognised bass player, composer and sought after sideman. Born in Basel, Switzerland in 1989 he moved to Australia with his parents in 1995. In 2010, he graduated from his Bachelor of Jazz with first class honours, majoring in performance on double bass from the Australian National University. After graduating Rafael was appointed to the pre-tertiary lecturing faculty at ANU. Since his return to Switzerland in 2013 he has recently completed his Master of Arts- Performance Double Bass at the Hochschule Luzern majoring on Double bass and simultaneously completing a minor in composition under the mentorship of internationally acclaimed jazz composer Ed Partyka.

Rafael performs regularly within Switzerland at various venues and jazz clubs including Moods (ZH), Mehrspur (ZH), Bejazz (BE) and Jazzkantine (LU). Rafael spent the summer of 2014 in Los Angeles recording his third album as a band leader supported by a grant from the Australian Council of the Arts. The album “Soul Station - Return” is an artistic tribute to the monumental “Soul Station” Blue Note record by Hank Mobley. It features some of the most renowned jazz artists of our time including Joe La Barbera (former drummer for the jazz legend Bill Evans), Grammy-Winner Bill Cunliffe, Bob Sheppard, Brian Scanlon, Kye Palmer and Bob McChesney.

Rafael tours regularly with various groups in Australia, Germany, Denmark, and Switzerland and has had the honour of sharing the stage with Dave Samuels, Katie Noonan, Kristin Berardi, Sandy Evans, James Greening, Matt McMahon, Matt Baker, Roberto Bossard, Elmar Frey, Andy Herrmann, Geir Lysne, and Tobias Cole.
