Ali Bodycoat Quartet

The Ali Bodycoat Quartet comprises a group of musicians who are true defenders of the Perth jazz narrative.

Ali has been gigging throughout Western Australia since 1995 - holding record residencies, performances at all Perth festivals, a variety of regular musical outfits at The Ellington Jazz Club and a continuing string of gigs throughout Perth's best venues.

Ali Bodycoat has been performing professionally in the Jazz scene throughout venues in Western Australia since 1995 with her Trio, Quartet and Quintet. She has held record residencies, performances at all Perth festivals, a variety of regular musical outfits at The Ellington Jazz Club and a continuing string of gigs throughout Perth's best venues including the Perth Jazz Society and Jazz Fremantle. She has also worked consistently in Musical Theatre with Yellow Glass Theatre Inc since studying at the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts in 2002. 

Well regarded as one of Western Australia’s most talented and respected professional jazz vocalists, Ali Bodycoat has established herself as an unrivalled force in the local jazz industry. A regular feature at The Ellington Jazz Club, Ali performs sold-out shows with the Ali Bodycoat Quintet, Quartet and Trio. Ali’s relationship with the microphone goes even further as she performs at and hosts various events such as StyleAid for the WA Aids Council and co-hosted North Street Music’s Chamber Jam evenings for three years at The Ellington Jazz Club.

Ali held a Jazz residency at the Subiaco Hotel for a staggering seventeen years, performing with her trio every Wednesday night. She continues to perform at top venues throughout Perth such as Government House, The Quarry Amphitheatre, The State Theatre, His Majesty’s Theatre, The Perth Concert Hall and The Weld Club.

Ali has taught Jazz Vocals at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts and as a Musical Theatre artist, has performed in, collaborated with and supported the yellow glass theatre company productions: Last Days Of Weimar, Rent, Rainy Days And Mondays – Songs Of the Carpenters, Company and Hair, and starred in Chicago as Roxy Hart at the Regal Theatre.

Chosen to support Marcia Hines in her 2008 concert at The Vines, Ali has also supported Vince Jones, Grace Knight and David Campbell and continues to work alongside some of Perth’s greatest Jazz musicians, such as world-renowned Perth export and Grammy nominated saxophonist, Troy Roberts and international Perth born artists, Graham Wood and Matt Jodrell. 

In 2010, Ali created and performed two sold-out seasons of Minor Major Marlene Downstairs At The Maj – (Cabaret Carnivale), a dedication to Marlene Dietrich. Minor Major Marlene was then performed over two sold out nights at The Ellington Jazz Club. Ali brought Marlene alive again this August, where she performed at the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre for the Morning Melodies series. In 2011, Ali performed and created Franklin – The Music of Aretha Franklin, with an eight-piece band, again to sold out seasons Downstairs at His Maj and The Ellington. The show was presented again at the Quarry Amphitheatre in 2013. In March 2013, Ali performed with The West Australian Symphony Orchestra for their Tribute to The Movies concert.

Ali performed at the VIP opening night party on the stage of the Perth Concert Hall for the inaugural Perth International Jazz Festival in May 2013 after the Joe Lovano, Vince Jones and Katie Noonan concert. In May 2014, Ali had a greater involvement with the Perth International Jazz Festival where she aided in the organization and then performed for the Perth International Jazz Festival flash mob in Forest Place. Ali performed at the Wetlands Stage with her Quintet as part of the festival program and introduced the James Magnusson Trio at the Ellington Jazz Club. Opening the annual Royal Flying Doctors Altitude Ball at the Crown Casino last August, Ali shared the bill with Cle Morgan and Kate Cebrano to a packed house. 

Ali is an ambassador for the internationally acclaimed Perth fashion designer, Aurelio Costarella and continues to support vehemently the exceptional artistic talent that thrives in Perth.
